SDS documents follow the GHS (Globally Harmonized System) 16-section format required by OSHA. Here's what you'll find in each section:

Sections 1-4: Identification & Hazards

  • Section 1: Product identifier, manufacturer info, emergency contact
  • Section 2: Hazard classification, signal words, pictograms
  • Section 3: Chemical composition and ingredient information
  • Section 4: First-aid measures by exposure route

Sections 5-8: Emergency & Handling

  • Section 5: Fire-fighting measures and extinguishing media
  • Section 6: Accidental release and spill cleanup procedures
  • Section 7: Safe handling and storage requirements
  • Section 8: Exposure limits and PPE recommendations

Sections 9-12: Properties & Hazards

  • Section 9: Physical and chemical properties
  • Section 10: Stability and reactivity information
  • Section 11: Toxicological effects and health hazards
  • Section 12: Ecological information

Sections 13-16: Disposal & Regulatory

  • Section 13: Disposal considerations and waste codes
  • Section 14: Transportation DOT/IATA information
  • Section 15: Regulatory status (EPA, OSHA, state)
  • Section 16: Revision date and additional information

OSHA SDS Requirements

Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), employers must maintain Safety Data Sheets for all hazardous chemicals in the workplace and ensure they are readily accessible to employees.

Key OSHA Requirements:

  • SDS must be available within each work shift for all hazardous chemicals
  • Employees must be trained on reading and understanding SDS
  • SDS must be in English (other languages may also be provided)
  • Electronic access is permitted if employees can access without barriers

SDS Frequently Asked Questions

How often are your SDS documents updated?

We review and update SDS documents whenever product formulations change, new hazard information becomes available, or regulatory requirements are updated. Most documents are reviewed at least annually. Each SDS includes a revision date in Section 16 so you can verify you have the current version.

Can I access SDS documents electronically for OSHA compliance?

Yes, OSHA allows electronic SDS access as long as employees can access the documents without barriers during their work shifts. This means no login requirements, fast loading, and devices readily available. Our SDS library can be bookmarked on facility computers or tablets for instant access.

Do you provide SDS training materials for employees?

Yes, we can provide SDS overview training materials for your safety team. These include guides on reading GHS format SDS documents, understanding hazard pictograms, and locating critical safety information. Contact us for training resources tailored to your products.

What PPE is recommended for your sanitizer products?

PPE requirements vary by product and are detailed in Section 8 of each SDS. Generally, our hand sanitizers require minimal PPE for normal use, while concentrated products like PAA sanitizers may require chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and adequate ventilation. Always refer to the specific SDS for your product.

Are your products compatible with other cleaning chemicals?

Chemical compatibility information is found in Section 10 (Stability and Reactivity) of each SDS. Generally, avoid mixing different sanitizer types without consulting documentation. Our quat-based and alcohol-based sanitizers should not be mixed, and PAA products have specific compatibility requirements detailed in their SDS.
